FASHION AND STYLE
Whether you live close by the water or nowhere near it at all, chances are you’ll be in somebody’s pool this summer, or perhaps chilling by a lake. I love the water and the feel of summer that it brings—so peaceful, yet so energizing.
I like to plan my water ensembles based on what’s on the menu. If we have adults lounging around, I like to wear a one-piece suit, more suitable for boating or water sports. An “everything big and bold” approach also goes with lake chilling. Think big hat, big sunglasses and perhaps a nice, big silky scarf to tie as a sarong or as a dress. Complete the look with a big straw bag, practical yet chic. Obviously, not every lake get-together means chic and sophisticated, so if a picnic by the lake is the plan, you can still wear your one-piece suit, but pair it with denim cut-offs or boyfriend shorts. A smaller hat, fedora style, might be more appropriate for the occasion also.
Now let’s say that you’ve got the kids and you’re going to the pool. I, myself, like to wear a two-piece bathing suit because it allows me to get a little tan while playing with the kids. I personally don’t care much for sunbathing—I think I lack the patience for it, and I get a more all-over tan by walking around sweating and being in and out of the water. For a gateway like this, I suggest you wear a sundress or a long cotton scarf to tie yourself into on top of the bathing suit. A sporty hat, such as a baseball cap, and aviator-style sunglasses would also be cool with this look. As a finishing touch, consider bringing a plastic or canvas bag to the pool. It’s almost a sure thing the bag will get wet, and that way your goodies will be safe!
The main thing we absolutely can’t forget when planning a day by the water are the sunscreens and lip balms. My favorite thing in the world for summer are the Illuminating Tinted Moisturizers by Laura Mercier. They have a glowy finish to them and an SPF 20. I usually re-apply every 2 to 3 hours, or if I’m not swimming, I just apply in the morning and wear my hat all day. I love eos lip balms, too. Besides the cuteness factor of their packaging, they are great and longwear. If you do mascaras, make sure they’re waterproof, and finish with a cream blush—they do look like our own inner cheek color! Lastly, drink lots and lots of water and keep hydrated. You’ll find that you glow from within.
Whatever choices you make, I wish you a hot, sweaty, fun-filled summer!
